# Adam West

Mayor of Quahog: the programme's version of the actor Adam West, who voiced the character.

## Core facts

- **Role:** Mayor of Quahog, with no party affiliation
- **Voiced by:** Adam West, the actor the character is named after
- **First appearance:** Fifteen Minutes of Shame (S02E12, 25 April 2000)
- **Created by:** Steve Callaghan and Seth MacFarlane. MacFarlane designed the character, after West played an odd, formally dressed version of himself in a 1997 Johnny Bravo episode that MacFarlane wrote.
- **Credited appearances:** 97 episodes across 17 seasons. This is a floor, because the source records at most ten voice credits per episode.

## Character

The character is calm and friendly but childish and unhinged. The mayor's schemes often waste the town's money or put residents at risk. Examples include:

- sending the police abroad to hunt for a fictional character
- paying for a gold statue of a frog
- sealing coffins in cement

The mayor has also been shown as a Russian sleeper agent, and Dr. C and the Women (S13E13) hints that the character's eccentric manner hides something darker.

## Relationships

- **Spouse:** [Carol Pewterschmidt](carol-pewterschmidt.md), whom the mayor marries in Brothers & Sisters (S09E15)
- **Cousin and successor:** Wild West, voiced by Sam Elliott, who becomes mayor from Wild Wild West (S19E07) onwards

## Later history

After the actor's death in June 2017 the character was killed off. Steve Callaghan told Entertainment Weekly that five finished episodes with the actor's performances had not yet aired at that point. The credited list runs to S18E05 Cat Fight.

## Common errors to avoid

- **The character is not the real actor.** The mayor is the programme's fictionalised version, voiced by the actor himself.
- **Wild West is a different character.** He is the mayor's rural cousin and took over the job. Sam Elliott voices him, not Adam West.
- **The character's appearances did not stop at once.** Episodes already recorded aired after the actor's death.

## Key episodes

- S02E12 Fifteen Minutes of Shame: first appearance
- S07E12 420: the mayor legalises cannabis, then reverses the policy
- S09E15 Brothers & Sisters: marries Carol Pewterschmidt
- S13E13 Dr. C and the Women: hints at a darker side
