# Herbert

John Herbert, an elderly Quahog resident and neighbour of the Griffins.

## Core facts

- **Voiced by:** Mike Henry, in every credited appearance
- **First appearance:** To Love and Die in Dixie (S03E12, 15 November 2001)
- **Created by:** Mike Henry, who also voices him; Seth MacFarlane designed him
- **Credited appearances:** 68 episodes across 19 seasons. This is a floor, because the source records at most ten voice credits per episode.

## Relationships

- **Neighbours:** the Griffins
- **Unreciprocated fixation:** [Chris Griffin](chris-griffin.md), who rejects him
- **Great-niece:** Sandy, his only named relative
- **Pet:** Jesse, an elderly dog that cannot use its hind legs

## Role in the show

Herbert lives alone with Jesse. He wears a pale blue dressing gown and uses a walking frame. The series writes him as a paedophile with an unreciprocated fixation on Chris, and critics are divided over the material built around him. He has been made into merchandise and also appears in *The Cleveland Show*.

## Wartime service

Padre de Familia (S06E06) presents him as a Second World War veteran who claims a Purple Heart, though the claim may not be true. German Guy (S09E11) says he was a prisoner of war sent to Dachau.

## Creation

Mike Henry joined the show as a writer once it was commissioned. The paedophile characterisation was not part of the original idea; Henry proposed it and the writers took it up. Henry's performance and the design drew on an elderly man he met while working in a grocery shop as a teenager.

## Common errors to avoid

- **Seth MacFarlane does not voice him.** Mike Henry does; MacFarlane designed him.
- **He was not in the first season.** His debut was in season 3.
