# Stewie Griffin

Infant of the Griffin family, a one-year-old with an adult vocabulary who began as a would-be supervillain.

## Core facts

- **Voiced by:** Seth MacFarlane, from the pilot to the present. The accent is based on Rex Harrison's performance in *My Fair Lady*.
- **First appearance:** Death Has a Shadow (S01E01, 31 January 1999)
- **Created by:** Seth MacFarlane
- **Credited appearances:** 438 episodes across 24 seasons. This is a floor, because the source records at most ten voice credits per episode.
- **Awards:** MacFarlane won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance in the role, and a 2006 Annie Award for Brian the Bachelor (S04E07).
- **Spin-off:** In March 2026 Fox ordered two seasons of a series titled *Stewie*, due in the 2027 to 2028 television season.

## Relationships

- **Parents:** [Lois Griffin](lois-griffin.md), the main target of his early schemes, and [Peter Griffin](peter-griffin.md)
- **Siblings:** [Meg](meg-griffin.md) and [Chris](chris-griffin.md)
- **Best friend:** [Brian Griffin](brian-griffin.md), whom he tormented early on
- **Ancestry:** a descendant of Leonardo da Vinci on Lois's side, revealed in The Big Bang Theory (S09E16)

## Character

He builds gadgets and weapons, mostly aimed at Lois, but keeps infant habits. After the film *Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story* and the two-part Stewie Kills Lois / Lois Kills Stewie, his violent side was toned down and he became more eccentric and friendly.

## Common errors to avoid

- **Lois did not die.** The events of Stewie Kills Lois (S06E04) and Lois Kills Stewie (S06E05) turn out to be mostly a computer simulation.
- **Who hears him is not fixed.** Brian always understands him, and Chris increasingly does. The writers usually keep Peter, Lois and Meg from hearing him, with Leggo My Meg-O (S10E20) the exception, and the rules bend for a joke.
- **His sexuality is deliberately ambiguous.** A coming-out episode, Queer Is Stewie?, was produced but never aired.
- **The Jimmy Corrigan comparison is disputed.** Commentators, Chris Ware among them, noted a likeness to Ware's character; Fox maintains Stewie is original.

## Key episodes

- S01E03 Chitty Chitty Death Bang: he turns one
- S06E04 Stewie Kills Lois and S06E05 Lois Kills Stewie: the two-part story that changed him
- S09E16 The Big Bang Theory: his da Vinci ancestry
- S19E01 Stewie's First Word: he concludes people understand him only when he wants them to
