Jesus, Mary and Joseph!

Episode 8 of Family Guy season 11 (S11E08), the 196th Family Guy episode overall. Written by Tom Devanney and directed by Julius Wu. First broadcast on 23 December 2012.

Story

Decorating the tree, Meg finds a manger ornament and Peter launches into a nativity of his own devising, with the household playing the parts. Joseph, played by Peter, courts Mary, played by Lois, and accepts her account of a visit from an angel. On the road to Bethlehem, three wise men played by Quagmire, Cleveland and Joe break their travel at the palace of Herod, played by Carter, who resolves to kill the child. Turned away by an innkeeper played by Mort, Mary gives birth in a stable, and a remark by the angel gives God the name Jesus. Herod arrives with soldiers, and the infant, played by Stewie, turns the manger into a fighter plane and wipes them out. Back home, Peter turns away a stranded pregnant couple.

Production and reception

  • The broadcast was put back a week because of its content, the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting having happened two days before the original date; a repeat of "Grumpy Old Man" ran instead. Wikipedia, Jesus, Mary and Joseph!
  • It took a 2.9 rating and 5.49 million viewers, second on the Fox animation line-up that night. Wikipedia, Jesus, Mary and Joseph!
  • Kevin McFarland of The A.V. Club graded it C, arguing that the series is normally sour towards religious belief but that this attempt was too scattered to carry any bite. Wikipedia, Jesus, Mary and Joseph!
  • Carter Dotson of TV Fanatic rated it 3.5 out of 5, suggesting the delay owed less to any single scene than to Fox avoiding crass material so soon after the shooting, though soldiers hunting an infant may have weighed on the decision. Wikipedia, Jesus, Mary and Joseph!
