Quagmire's Dad
Episode 18 of Family Guy season 8 (S08E18), the 144th Family Guy episode overall. Written by Tom Devanney and directed by Pete Michels. First broadcast on 9 May 2010.
Story
Quagmire's father, Lieutenant Commander Dan Quagmire, comes to Quahog, and Peter and Joe are taken aback by his manner. At a naval ball held in his honour the remarks of the other guests lead Quagmire to ask his father whether he is gay. Dan replies that he is instead a woman in a man's body and will have gender reassignment surgery while in town. The operation goes ahead and Dan becomes Ida Davis. Quagmire cannot cope with the change and Ida moves to a hotel. Brian, back from a seminar and knowing none of this, meets Ida there and sleeps with her. Stewie tells him who she is. Ida and Quagmire make up, but when she names Brian, Quagmire finds him and beats him.
Production and reception
- Nielsen figures put the first broadcast at 7.22 million homes, with a 3.8 rating among viewers aged 18 to 49, ahead of American Dad!, The Simpsons and The Cleveland Show. Wikipedia, Quagmire's Dad
- Seth MacFarlane voiced both Dan and Ida. He designed the character to resemble the actor Paul Bettany, and Pete Michels adapted that design. Wikipedia, Quagmire's Dad
- Speaking to the website AfterElton.com in January 2010, MacFarlane predicted that transgender viewers would be pleased with the episode and called it about the most sympathetic such portrayal yet broadcast. Wikipedia, Quagmire's Dad
- The treatment of Ida drew criticism from the Parents Television Council and from GLAAD, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. Reviewers repeatedly compared it with I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, the 2007 film. Wikipedia, Quagmire's Dad
- Tom Eames of Digital Spy placed it tenth in a list of the best episodes of the series. Wikipedia, Quagmire's Dad
